GOTS certification in Madagascar
Definition of GOTS certification applied to textile manufacturers in Madagascar: scope, audit, steps to obtain it, certification bodies.
Definition
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is an international certification covering the entire processing chain of organic textile fibers, from harvest to finished product. For a textile manufacturer in Madagascar, GOTS certification attests both to the organic content of materials and to compliance with social and environmental criteria.
Scope covered
- Organic fiber content (minimum 70% for "GOTS made with", 95% for "GOTS organic")
- Authorised and banned chemicals during processing
- Wastewater treatment
- Social criteria: no forced labour, no child labour, freedom of association, living wage, occupational safety
- Documentary traceability from raw material to finished product
Certification process
Certification is issued by an independent accredited certification body (Ecocert, Control Union, CERES, etc.) following an annual on-site audit. In Madagascar, audits are typically conducted by inspectors based in the Indian Ocean region or East Africa. The full first-time certification cycle generally takes 3 to 9 months.
Validity and renewal
The certificate is valid for one year and renewed after annual audit. Each GOTS order is accompanied by a Transaction Certificate (TC) ensuring order-by-order traceability.
