GOTS Organic Baby Pajamas Manufacturing: The Complete Guide
Pajamas are the garment a baby wears most: 12 hours a day against skin 5 times thinner than an adult's. Here's how we manufacture GOTS-certified organic pajamas for European nursery brands.
The 4 uses of baby pajamas
Baby pajamas are a complex daily object. We distinguish:
- Daywear pajama (footed romper, sleeper) worn at home, open at birth and at the crotch for easy diaper change
- Nightwear pajama with integrated feet, often with a sleep sack on top
- Summer pajama in light jersey 140-160 g/m² without feet
- Winter pajama in fleece or velour 250-300 g/m² with non-slip feet
Each use requires its own fabric, cut and finish. A brand should structure its range across at least 2 of these 4 axes.
Suitable organic fabrics
We prioritise three GOTS-certified organic fabrics:
| Fabric | Weight | Season |
|---|---|---|
| Organic cotton jersey | 140-180 g/m² | Summer / mid-season |
| Organic cotton interlock | 200-240 g/m² | Year-round |
| Organic cotton fleece | 250-300 g/m² | Winter |
Bamboo and modal are possible but less traceable — we recommend sticking to GOTS organic cotton, the only truly verifiable standard in baby textiles.
Cuts by age 0-24 months
0-3 months: front crossover opening + snap crotch, folded cuffs to cover hands.
3-6 months: diagonal zip or snap opening from collar to foot, closed feet.
6-12 months: diagonal zip with chin guard, closed non-slip feet.
12-24 months: two-piece (top + bottom) for parent autonomy (potty training), or one-piece with detachable feet.
We industrialise these cuts on our small-run lines to enable testing a full range from 150 pieces per SKU.
Safety & standards
An EU-compliant baby pajama respects:
- EN 14682 — no drawstrings at the head, max 14 cm cords at the neck
- EN 14878 — flammability (especially for fluffy fabrics)
- REACH — 60+ restricted or banned chemical substances
- Labelling 96/74/EC — fibre composition in country language
LOI Confection integrates these checks in our 7-step quality process and provides SGS/Bureau Veritas test reports on request.
Differentiating finishes
In the premium market, the difference plays out in the finishes:
- Flat seams anti-irritation across the pajama
- Printed label on the back (instead of sewn textile)
- Hand embroidery initials/name on chest or foot (+€2-4/piece)
- Nickel-free snap buttons or wooden buttons to avoid allergy
- Concealed zip under a fabric flap
Hand embroidery remains our signature added value to justify a +30-50% positioning vs market.
